Tips for Growing Brussels Sprouts






Brussels sprouts always agree with fall temperature. To bring its sweetness, you may need to time your plant for overnight fall frosts. It isn’t hard to grow but you will need to understand several important aspects from it. Check out the following tips for a successful start with your Brussels sprouts.


  • Around an inch diameter sprout is considered small and is the tenderest. Work with it delicately.
  • You can remove sprouts by twisting it sfrom the stem.
  • Uproot the plants right before a deep freeze. Remove the entire remaining leaves, and hang your plants upside down for a few weeks in a cool place before you harvest it.
  • Fall is the perfect time to grow it and it requires around 60° to 65° Fahrenheit temperature. Maintain it.
  • Provide at least six hours of direct sunlight exposure. More is always better.
  • Add about two inches distance between the plants so it has rooms to grows and expands.
  • Mulch the soil to retain its moisture.
  • Your sprouts like a lot of water and wet leaves so water regularly and freely.
  • Hand pull all weeds in the pots to prevent it from damaging the plants shallow roots.
  • Mound dirt is needed for early support, but stakes are needed for the later.
  • Use well drained soil for media.
  • Give liquid fertilizer to the plants once every month.
  • Maintain the nitrogen. It produces leaves production but not the sprouts.
  • Strip all yellowing leaves at the lower parts.
  • Pinch off the plants top to force the sprouts to mature even faster.
  • Prune the top of your sprouts in late August to mid September or three weeks before you harvest it.
  • Remove six to eight leaves from the lowermost as the stalk starts to spread.
  • Time your planting to assess the best and appropriate action.
  • You can harvest the sprouts after the first or second frost. It usually starts in October as well.
  • Harvest your sprouts from the bottom up and only take the large ones.


Brussels sprouts are strong plants originally. It survives during all seasons, but winter is the best for it. Make sure to apply those tips to get healthy and best quality sprouts. It doesn’t take a green thumb to successfully grow this plant but it takes a little effort and attention.
